I think when new users come in, they should be guided to several different stations to start. This forum is a bit cluttered at the moment.
Bugs and feedback should also be condensed into one special post each or there should be a station every week or module to report bugs and make suggestions.
-
Some announcement posts should be set to read only is possible, again, to prevent flooding.
-
@The-Blade-Dancer This is a great idea! We can move all of the bug or error posts to a central location once they have been resolved. Thank you for these cool ideas.

The one thing I always hate about games and things these days is that I'm overwhelmed joining to start. My favorite game, League of Legends, took me 3 years to be barely semi-good, and I have an alternate account from which I really experienced how hard it is for new players. There's no real why to fix it but we can do as much as we can.
-
I'm curious: what can you do with this forum? Because I'm an avid Discord server builder, and if the forum is anything like Discord, we could get some really cool stuff going.
-
@The-Blade-Dancer We're very open to building and improving the forum! What sorts of ideas do you suggest?
-
I want to know what's possible at the moment. Is there a way to get special access to certain things you can't see otherwise, like such a setup?
-
Pretty sure we could do a lot more with roles, because I heard you say something about users not having module roles not being able to see course discussions.
-
@The-Blade-Dancer It's really cool that you are interested in helping the forum.
It's possible to make groups that have access to only certain categories, and specific privileges (read-only ability, posting ability, editing ability, etc.) These groups (or "roles") can be made by the admins.
Right now, anyone enrolled in at least one course can view any of the Course Discussion Module categories, even in courses that they aren't enrolled in. Users who have an account but are enrolled in any courses can view the Ask Math Anything, General, Comments and Announcements categories.
Are you suggesting to create additional groups based on common interest? Please float your ideas, as we're excited to find new ways to freshen up the forum. We're often busy with other course-related work, so we don't get to think about this as much as we would like to.
I've taken note of your observation that the forum is a bit cluttered. It could benefit from some organization with sub-categories. That's something we will try to implement soon! Thanks for the suggestion!
-
Yup additional private groups no one else can see (is there a way people can get roles themselves with no admin? hmm) and for example, all extra conversations in announcement channels should be cleared and all those conversations can take place in a separate post in the announcements category. Like the typing math help, you can't type in there but you can ask for help in a post right beneath.
-
@The-Blade-Dancer These are more great ideas! We'll implement them as soon as we get a chance. Would you mind giving examples of some sorts of new groups would you be interested in? I think creating the groups would be an official admin responsibility, as we can't have normal users do so, but it's definitely something we can look into.

For example gaming chats in general chats? Also normal math class discussions? Math problems they've encountered themselves?
-
Screenshot of my Discord server. As you can see, there's many categories and channels in each category to split things up evenly and allow different people to talk in different chats.
On the right you can see the roles are listed and users who have them at the top of their role list. Don't mind some of my friends, they have very weird statuses.
-
@The-Blade-Dancer Thanks for the examples! There's a distinction between group and category; are you thinking of, for example, a category for gaming chats, or a group for gaming chats? From my perspective, it seems like the group only serves as an identifier to see what affiliations a user has. Aside from this, if the purpose is simply to organize the chats better, then categories would suffice, would it not?
-
Maybe a group my point is roles and specific chats for those roles would help people navigate better and get less unnecessary notifications. Just my opinions, they don't have to be taken.
-
@The-Blade-Dancer I really love your suggestions! I just want to understand what you mean. I do see how getting notifications for every single new post can be excessive. Do you mean a private pop-up chat box for users in a certain group? We've looked into this before, and it looks like the developers of NodeBB preferred not to allow private group chats. https://forum.poshenloh.com/topic/311/how-do-you-make-a-chat/6?_=1599050111482
