      You can actually ignore the half almond in the center of the shape and think of the other shapes that you could cut the 2 overlapping circles into.

      I cut it into two 2/3 circles (one on each side) and a rhombus in the center. The 2/3 circles each have area 2/3x36pi=24pi and the rhombus is made by adding 2 equilateral triangles, each with area 9 root 3.

      So the total area is
      2x24pi+18 root 3
      which is equal to Prof. Loh's answer of
      48pi+18 root 3

        @iamnotawhale Yeah, that's a really good solution too! Just goes to show how there are so many different ways to solve something, all equally unique and efficient 🙂
