          The thing is that the solar panel is twice as far from the sun as it was originally. I just thought very simply and what I thought was that one times as far from the sun = 1/2 light received and two times as far from the sun = 1/2 times 1/2 equals to 1/4 light received. If you think about it, I don’t even know if it makes sense, but I didn’t get the question right.

            One way to imagine it is like this: You are at the center of a huge balloon. You want to draw a little square on the balloon and you have a very accurate can of spray paint in your hand. The paint is yellow.

            First, you spray the little square with the yellow paint. Now pretend that this balloon is blown up so that the surface of the balloon is twice as far from you as it was before. The little square also gets blown up; each of its sides becomes twice as long. Now, from where you are standing, you spray the yellow paint, if you compare two spots of equal size on both the larger and smaller squares, then the spot on the larger square will have less paint on it; it will look less yellow.

            Do you see that the larger square will look less yellow, because your paint spray is spread out over more area? The bigger square could fit four of the little squares inside of it, so the bigger square will get one-fourth the yellow paint as the little square.

            Now if you pretend that there is no balloon, but simply the square patch floating out in space, and pretend also that the yellow paint is really sunlight, then you see this is similar to the problem that is described in the lesson!

              I got it right. I figured it out this way:

              The panel is already some distance away from the sun. It then moves away from the sun by 2. So overall it is now 4 times away from the sun (as 2 times 2 = 4 because the solar panel [looked] twice from the sun already).

              Now I know it is a total of 4 times away from the sun.

              We from experience also know that the more we get away from the light, the less infared radiation we absorb by that factor we moved our distance by. It brings us o say that energy output from Sun is inversely proportional to distance. So it looks like:

              energy = k / d

              where k is constant and d is distance

              I already know distance is 4, so its going to be:

              1 / 4 done 🙂

                @debbie Yeah at first I was like "what is it" but then I thought since it is already far away from the sun and it is moving by two I can just do 2x2.
